Dragon Boat Race Discovery Bay HK
Tai Pak Beach, Discovery Bay 2008
What better way to celebrate the ocean than to have the annual dragon boat race (Tuen Ng Festival) in Hong Kong on June 8 th (World Ocean Day) . Tuen Ng Festival has been celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth moon (early June) for the past two and a half millennia! World Ocean Day was established in 1992 to raise awareness of the important connection between people and the ocean during the Rio De Janeiro Earth Summit.
Discovery Bay like other bays in and around Hong Kong celebrate this tradition every year.
This is the Dragon boat festival market in Discovery bay on Lantau Island, as you can see its full of colour and a great family day out.
Most people are not aware of the crucial role the ocean plays in maintaining the earth’s climate and the vulnerability of ocean life to warmer, more acidic, and rising waters as a result of climate change. World Ocean Day is a time to take a hard look at the current state of our oceans… and at our responsibility to protect the ocean from harm. So make it a date every year to visit the beach on this special occasion and support the teams in the dragon boats – a symbol of protection from harm; and support our oceans by keeping the beaches and water clean. May this marvelous tradition of celebrating the beauty and power of man and ocean continue for many generations to come!
