Located in Xi’an, Shaanxi this awesome discovery was made by local peasants digging a well in 1974 and still being worked on to this day.
The terracotta army was guarding the tomb of the First Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang di, who lived over 2200 years ago. He became famous for unifying the warring states into what is now China, and for becoming the country’s first emperor. He is remembered for instigating the building of the Great Wall of China, and having a massive fear of death and being obsessive for the secret of immortality. This insaine life and the fear of death ultimately gave us the mind blowing terracotta warriors.
There are 3 different pits or chambers at the Terracotta Army centre in pit one over 6000 warriors line up in battle formation these would have all been hand painted, among the soldiers high ranking officers where placed these where all taller than the others to portray power.
One of the most interesting sites is the kneeling archer with a cloaked upper body and square toed shoes for extra grip.
The life sized Terracotta Army would have been equipped with weapons such as swords, bows and spears. There has been worldwide fascination in the discovery of the Terracotta Army and it is now regarded as the 8th Wonder of the Ancient World.
